What is Infertility ?

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive despite unprotected intercourse for two years, without the presence of any identified cause. Infertility in itself might not affect physical health; however it can have serious impact on the mental and social well being of the affected parent or couple.

There are two types of infertility:
1. Primary infertility– When the couple has never been able to conceive.
2. Secondary infertility– When the couple has been able to at least conceive once.

What causes infertility ?

Infertility can be attributed to dysfunctions in both the male and/or female partner.

30% of cases of infertility are due to issues with the female partner, such as:

• An ovulation or ovulation disorders
• Tubo-peritoneal causes or obstructions in the Fallopian tubes
• Endometriosis
• Uterine or cervical anomalies

30% of cases of infertility are due to issues with the male partner, such as:

• Dysfunctions in the testicles
• Tubal obstructions
• Problems with ejaculation or erectile functions
• Semen quality
• Other prostrate pathologies

20% of cases are due to the combined issues in which both the male and female factors are involved.
